About OCCE

OCCE At A Glance

OCCE is organized to encourage the highest professional standards for the men and women in Chamber of Commerce Management and to advance close unity among its members.   With that in mind, below is a list of services provided through our organization.

The programs listed are put together with as minimal cost as possible without sacrificing value and content to you, the member.  Fees vary from event to event.

OCCE also awards scholarships throughout the year to these programs so that we can continue to meet our mission of encouraging the highest professional standards of the professionals within our industry.

Volunteer Leadership Training: This program content provides a clear understanding of the differing yet cooperative roles the chief paid staff person and the chief elected board member (volunteer) plays in the success of a chamber of commerce.   Often times, incoming board members attend as well in an effort to provide continuity and direction for the chamber for several years.   This is generally held in conjunction with OCCE's Annual Meeting the first or second week of November each year.

Spring and Fall:
Chamber Management Institute: This program is held one day a month for four consecutive months twice each year in the spring and fall and is geared toward giving new employees to the chamber profession insight into the roles and responsibilities of being a part of a successful chamber of commerce.  In addition to the formal classroom instruction, attendees are able to network with each other, thereby increasing their learning potential.  Graduates of the program are encouraged to implement new ideas, and programs strategies learned to improve their own chamber programs, activities and events.  This program, depending on the need, can be held twice a year in order to train new executives in the industry.  Graduates from this course are recognized at either the Summer Management Conference or Annual Conference.

Spring Conference:  This conference primarily offers OCCE members networking opportunities coupled with motivational and educational programs for a day and a half.  This conference is generally held in a resort location in Oklahoma and is utilized by chamber professionals seeking new ideas and innovative ideas within the industry and helps to keep the energy and juices flowing throughout the remainder of their chamber year.

Annual Conference: This one and a half day conference is generally when OCCE recognizes outstanding achievements in the chamber profession as well as recognizes new committee members and board members for the organization.  Heavy emphasis is placed on program content dealing with issues of current interest to the chamber profession whether it be board development, membership recruitment/retention, economic development or volunteerism.

Additional non-OCCE Continuing Education:

March of each year: Center for Chamber of Commerce Excellence: This one-and-a-half-day program held in Texas each year has two components:  The Fundamentals Course provides insight and overview of chamber operations and management issues, community and economic development, public policy, tourism marketing and membership recruitment/retention.  The Advanced Studies course content is geared toward the seasoned chamber professional and addresses different specific topics dealing with current Chamber world challenges/opportunities.

This program was started in August of 1999 in order to provide a basic understanding of chamber management and give chamber employees at all levels in introduction to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for Organization Management Programs that are held throughout the year in various locations within the United States.  Graduates of the Center for Chamber Excellence program are encouraged to continue their learning by enrolling in the Institute for Organization Management program sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Institutes for Organization Management:  Visit www.uschamber.org for more information on these outstanding programs.

Note:  OCCE is an affiliate organization of The State Chamber, Oklahoma's Association of Business and Industry.  Because of the tremendous success of Oklahoma chambers working together on key state issues like Right-to-Work, Chambers for China and others, there has been a heightened awareness of chambers of commerce and what/who they represent.  Therefore, OCCE makes every effort to lessen the amount of correspondence each of our members receives by continuing to publish a newsletter and maintain an up-to-date Web site.  We value our members and want to maximize opportunities while minimizing the amount of time you spend reading unwanted materials.
